In de spotlight… Oriole

Op een ontdekkingstocht langs de interessante melodieën en ritmes die jazz te bieden heeft, hoopt Oriole met een eigen repertoire op veel mooie podia neer te strijken.

Het zijn interessante tijden voor Oriole. Het jazz-duo, bestaande uit Evelien Slegers en Erik Verberne, staat bekend om hun warme akoestische jazzy covers van tracks uit allerlei genres, maar binnenkort gaat daar ook eigen repertoire aan toegevoegd worden. Evelien Slegers: “Momenteel zijn we bezig met het schrijven van eigen nummers en leer ik ook basgitaar te spelen, zodat we tijdens live optredens een extra laag aan onze muziek kunnen toevoegen.”.

Aan motivatie geen gebrek, want de liefde voor jazz zit diep bij beiden, Slegers: “De warme sferen en improvisaties in jazz spreken mij erg aan. Op zoek gaan naar interessante melodieën en ritmes vind ik een leuke uitdaging en door elke keer opnieuw in ‘het onbekende’ te duiken en uit je comfortzone te stappen kan je jezelf steeds opnieuw blijven verrassen en uitdagen”.

Met een opleiding als jazz-vocalist en jazz-gitarist en inspiratiebronnen als Nina Simone, Paul Simon, Esperanza Spalding en Joni Mitchell, lijken alle ingrediënten daar te zijn voor een prachtige debuutplaat. Hoe het publiek straks kan genieten van hun nieuwe muziek? Daar heeft Slegers wel een wens voor: “Het lijkt me super vet om met mijn eigen nummers ooit in Paradox te spelen. Ik kom daar natuurlijk vaak vanwege mijn jazzopleiding, dus het voelt daar bekend en fijn. Als ik daar een concert zou kunnen geven met eigen werk, is de cirkel rond!”.

Dus, lieve mensen van Paradox, jullie hebben vast nog wel een mooie avond vrij komend jaar?

On an journey of discovery through the interesting melodies and rhythms that jazz has to offer, Oriole hopes to descend on many fine stages with a repertoire of their own.

These are exciting times for Oriole. The jazz-duo, formed by Evelien Slegers and Erik Verberne, is known for their warm acoustic jazzy covers of tracks from all kinds of genres, but soon their own repertoire will be added. Evelien Slegers: “Currently we are writing our own songs and I am also learning to play bass guitar, so we can add an extra layer to our music during live performances.”

Not lacking in motivation, as the love for jazz runs deep in both of them, Slegers: “The warm atmospheres and improvisations in jazz really appeal to me. Looking for interesting melodies and rhythms is a fun challenge for me, and by diving into ’the unknown’ each time and stepping out of your comfort zone, you can keep surprising and challenging yourself.”

With an education as a jazz vocalist and jazz guitarist and inspirations like Nina Simone, Paul Simon, Esperanza Spalding and Joni Mitchell, all the ingredients seem to be there for a wonderful debut album. How audiences will soon be able to enjoy their new music? Slegers does have a wish for that: “I think it would be super nice to play Paradox with my own songs one day. I come there often because of my jazz education, of course, so it feels familiar and nice there. If I could give a concert there with my own work, the circle would be complete!”.
