Van Legally Blonde via de Hasseltse Kapel naar een prachtig Italiaans Operahuis.

Al van jongs af aan ging er voor de Zuid-Afrikaanse sopraan, Ashley Stapelfeldt geen dag voorbij zonder muziek. Toen ze tijdens high school glansrijk de rol van Paulette in de musical Legally Blonde vervulde realiseerde ze zich dat ze zangeres wilde worden.

Toen ze muziek en drama studeerde ontdekte ze een diepe liefde voor de opera. Ashley: “Toen ik tijdens lunch een operaconcert bijwoonde was ik diep onder de indruk van de sopraanzangeres die ik op het podium zag, ik werd op slag verliefd op het genre en wist direct dat ik dit ook wilde.” Die liefde voor de opera bleek een blijvende. Aan de Universiteit van Kaapstad behaalde Ashley haar Bachelor of Music met een specialisatie in operazang. Daarna streek ze neer in Tilburg, waar ze startte met de Master of Music aan de Fontys Academy of the Arts.

In Tilburg beleefde ze ook een concert dat een speciaal plekje in haar hart heeft: “Thuis in Zuid-Afrika zong ik vaak in de kerk, waar ik altijd enorm van genoot. Sinds ik in Nederland woonde was mij dat nog niet gelukt, totdat ik de kans kreeg op een concert in de Hasseltse Kapel. Buiten stond een prachtige kersenbloesemboom die tot boven de kapel uittorende. Deze viel mij op toen ik tijdens één van mijn aria’s van Puccini uit het raam keek, wat bijdroeg aan de schoonheid van die uitvoering. Het was ook het concert waar ik mijn eerste staande ovatie ontving.”

Inmiddels heeft Ashley al op menig Nederlands podium gestaan, waaronder die van het Storioni Festival en concertzaal Willem Twee. Haar droom reikt echter een stuk zuidelijker: “Ik zou heel graag willen optreden in een prachtig Italiaans operahuis. Ik heb altijd van het idee gehouden om te kunnen reizen en zingen; ik denk dat het heel speciaal voor mij zou om te zingen op de plek waar de opera geboren is.”

From an early age, not a day went by without music for South African soprano, Ashley Stapelfeldt. When she gloriously performed the role of Paulette in the musical Legally Blonde during high school, she realized she wanted to become a professional singer.

While she was studying music and drama, she discovered a deep love for opera. Ashley: “When I attended an opera concert during lunch, I was deeply impressed by the soprano singer I saw on stage, I instantly fell in love with the genre and knew immediately that this was what I truly wanted to do.” That love for opera proved to be a lasting one. At the University of Cape Town, Ashley obtained her Bachelor of Music with a specialisation in opera voice. She then settled in Tilburg, where she started the Master of Music at the Fontys Academy of the Arts.

In Tilburg, she also enjoyed one of the performances that holds a special place in her heart: “At home in South Africa, I often sang in church, which I always enjoyed enormously. Since moving to the Netherlands, I had not been able to do so until I got the chance to perform in concert at the Hasselt Chapel. There was a beautiful cherry blossom tree outside, towering above the chapel. It caught my eye when I looked out of the window during one of my arias of Puccini, which added to the beauty of that performance. It was also the concert where I received my first standing ovation.”

Since then Ashley has performed on numerous Dutch stages, including those of the Storioni Festival and the concert hall Willem Twee. However, her dream reaches further south: “I would love to perform in a beautiful Italian opera house. I’ve always loved the idea of being able to travel and sing; I think it would be very special for me to sing in the place where opera was born.”
