Hoe een draak, veel glitter en komedie samenkomen in een sprookje voor volwassenen

Het moderne circus staat garant voor spannende, relevante voorstellingen die traditionele disciplines als jongleren en acrobatiek samen laten komen met storytelling en performance art. Een perfect voorbeeld van de moderne circusmaker is Anika Baines, deze zomer afgestudeerd aan de Fontys Circus and Performance Art en in de startblokken om de wereld kennis te laten maken met haar wereld vol draken en glitters.

Voordat we die wereld betreden gaan we eerst een paar jaren terug. Want hoe kom je in de wonderlijke wereld van het circus terecht? Voor Anika startte die reis in haar moederland Zuid-Afika: “Als kind was ik al erg sportief en toen ik op mijn vijftiende begon met paalsport maakte ik kennis met de wereld van het circus. Vlak daarna verhuisde ik met mijn familie naar Nederland, en ontdekte ik dat circus erg populair in Europa is en er zelfs circusscholen waren.”

Haar studie doorliep ze met verve: “Ik ben gespecialiseerd in aerial hoop met een achtergrond in handstanden, acrobatiek en paaldansen. De manier waarop ik dat doe is veranderd van sportief naar artistiek. Ik werd verliefd op de vrijheid en mogelijkheden die de hoepel biedt en hoe je hem op zoveel verschillende manieren kunt gebruiken, inclusief de mogelijkheid om hem in een draak te veranderen.”

Ja, die draak, hoe zit dat nu precies? Anika: “Ik neig veel naar komedie en absurditeit in mijn voorstellingen. Op dit moment ben ik bezig met het maken van een show die elementen van circus, burlesque en pantomime combineert om een nieuwe kijk op vrouwelijke empowerment, body acceptance en zelfliefde te verkennen. Het concept is een show van 30 minuten genaamd: “One girl, one dragon, a world of adventure.” Het wordt een sprookje voor volwassenen waarbij een draak en een heleboel glitter komt kijken. De première is op Festival Circolo in oktober 2024.”

Mooie vooruitzichten lonken, waarbij al haar ervaringen van vier jaar Circus and Performance Art goed van pas komen. Heeft ze tot slot nog een advies aan de nieuwe lichting studenten? Anika: “Jazeker! Rust is iets goeds. Zoek een goede fysiotherapeut die je vertrouwt. Wees voorbereid op veel papierwerk, e-mailen en subsidieaanvragen en zorg ervoor dat je altijd geld overhoudt voor chocola en ijs.

Modern circus stands for exciting, relevant performances that fuse traditional disciplines like juggling and acrobatics with storytelling and performance art. A perfect example of the modern circus creator is Anika Baines, who graduated from Fontys Circus and Performance Art this summer and is in the starting blocks to introduce the world to her world of dragons and glitter.

Before stepping into that world, we go back a few years. Because how does one enter the wonderful world of circus? For Anika, that journey started in her homeland of South Africa: “As a child, I was already very athletic and when I started pole sports at 15, I was introduced to the world of circus. Soon after, I moved to the Netherlands with my family, and discovered that circus is very popular in Europe and there were even circus schools.”

She went through her studies with flying colours: “I am specialized in aerial hoop with a strong back ground in handstands, acrobatics and pole dance. The way in which I perform has changed from sporty to artistic. I fell in love with the freedom and possibilities that the hoop provides and how you can use it in so many different ways, including being able to transform it into a dragon.”

Yes, that dragon, so where exactly is that going? Anika: “I lean towards comedy and absurdity with my creations. Currently I am in the process of creating a show that combines elements of circus, burlesque, and pantomime to explore a new view on female empowerment, body acceptance and self-love. The concept is a 30-minute show called: “One girl, one dragon, a world of adventure.” It will be a fairy tale for adults which will premier at Festival Circolo in October 2024.

Bright future lies ahead, with all her experience from four years of Circus and Performance Art being of great use. Finally, does she have any advice for the new batch of students? Anika: “Yes definitely! Rest is a good thing. Find a good physiotherapist you trust. Be prepared for a lot of paperwork, e-mailing and grant applications and make sure you always have money left over for chocolate and ice cream.”
